Before You Select a General Dentist

Pediatric dentistry is an investment in the future of your child's smile. And, like any investment, you'll want to do a little research before making a final decision on dental work. These guidelines can help you choose the practitioner who's right for you.

1. Check the doctor's credentials.

   Is the dentist a board-certified specialist in pediatric dentistry? Pediatric dentists complete two additional years of post-doctoral study in order to fully understand how to care for children's and adolescents' teeth. Though licensed general dentists can perform dentistry on children, not all general practitioners have the experience to do it well. No matter who you choose, make sure the dentist is licensed through the state dental board.

2. Investigate the doctor's training.

   The best pediatric dentists didn't just go to dental school; they also completed extensive post-graduate training programs that focus specifically on issues of pediatric dentistry. In addition, the best dentists regularly attend continuing education classes to stay up-to-date on new procedures and materials.

3. Make sure it's a place where your child is comfortable.

   Children's teeth are different from adults' - and so are their temperaments! A good pediatric dentist will have some training in child psychology, and a good pediatric dental practice will be a place where children feel comfortable and safe.

4. It's never to early to take your child to the dentist.

   Don't postpone your child's dental care. Most pediatric dentists recommend that children have their first dental visit around their first birthday. It's important to monitor your child's teeth!

5. A good dentists should stress the importance of continuing care.

   With children, a dentist's job is more than just addressing their current dental problems. Parents need to make their kids brush their teeth; pediatric dentists need to help teach young people the importance of caring for their smile for years to come.

6. Start with a consultation.

   Going in for a consultation is a great way to learn more about a dentist and dental practice. Consultations are generally inexpensive, and are sometimes even offered for free. Talk to the dentist before you commit to anything. Remember, it's your job to make an educated decision.

7. Nothing compares to experience.

   Much like other people, dentists get better at things the more they do them. Ideally, your dentist will have lots of experience with pediatric dentistry and working with child and adolescent patients.

8. Communication is key.

   It's essential that you and your child be able to talk to your dentist - and that your dentist will listen to you! There's a lot of dialogue that needs to go into long-term dental care. If your child feels pressured, rushed, or anxious then that's probably not the right dentist for you.

9. Don't pay too much - or too little.

   Some dentists charge more by marketing themselves as high-end luxury dentists offering cosmetic smile makeovers. Other dentists try to make up for poor materials and shoddy work by offering low prices. Beware the extremes.

10. An honest dentist sets realistic expectations.

    Watch out for doctors who promise more than they can deliver. You want a dentist who will tell you what sort of dental (and possibly orthodontic) care your child will require over the coming years.
